about

Tolliver's performance of "Say What!" on The Late Late Show with James Corden: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py0OguuwGwc

Chicago bred, LA-based Tolliver is the shimmering sequin-loving son of a cowboy-obsessed pastor and a gospel choir singer. Growing up immersed in the church, Tolliver witnessed his father’s death at 11 years old and life shifted. Spending over a decade living in the shadow of worrying that his father would condemn his lifestyle - a broke, gay, super-hot musician - Tolliver reconnected with his brother and learned of his father’s own faults and promiscuties. Cue the birth of the Daddyland EP, a letter to his father from the void, to their relationship and the self Tolliver has grown to be. Recorded at a home studio in Glendale, CA with the help of producer Jake Bowman (Kendrick Lamar, Ryan Beatty, Burna Boy), Teddy Roxpin (drums and percussion) and Todd Simon (trumpet), Daddyland is a vibrant, sassy, challenge to appreciate and love your imperfections. Daddyland releases Nov. 19 via SideOneDummy.

"Ohh hello, father of mine. You know what’s weird? I miss you every day, but I don’t even know if the version of you I miss is a real person. You died when I was so young that the decade of memories I have are simply amalgamations of your best qualities. You prayed with me and Tuffy every night, made sure we had everything we needed - still mad at you for making me wear Urkel glasses at the HEIGHT of his popularity. I like myself more now, my imperfections, my weirdest parts, these are my favorites.

I know how much you loved me, but I wonder sometimes if that love would’ve soured when you realized this son of a pastor loves kissing big, hairy men - I stop at kissing because I’m a gentleman - or if you found out I used to sell coke, or if you found out I edited gay porn, on and on and on and on. I have been ashamed of your opinions of me yet will never know what they really would have been.

And so I wanted to make this record for us. Because we’re both very flawed people who give a lot of love, who work hard but also play a little too hard, who love big fat butts and lending people money. I wanted to show you who I am, and get closer to who you are, because I miss you and still can’t believe you’re gone. Anyway, hope you’re having a good day in purgatory. Love you dad."
